GE Senior Counsel Joins Miles & Stockbridge P.C.

Lee Bishop to Bring Extensive Experience in CPSC and Risk Management to Law Firm’s Products Liability Practice

BALTIMORE, MD, June 21, 2010 – Miles & Stockbridge P.C. announced today that Lee L. Bishop, who has spent the last 16 years as Senior Counsel for Product Safety and Regulatory Compliance for General Electric Company’s (GE) consumer products, lighting, and electrical industrial equipment businesses, has joined the Firm’s Litigation Department as Counsel in its Products Liability Practice Group. He will advise clients on a full range of consumer and industrial product issues with a particular emphasis on product risk management, product recalls, warnings, product safety and liability issues, quality, and regulatory compliance.

While with GE’s Appliances & Lighting division, headquartered in Louisville, KY, Bishop created and managed global business product safety processes, advised senior management on potential hazards, and directly managed all recalls and product quality advisories for GE consumer and industrial products globally. As GE’s only resident legal expert on recalls and product safety management, he consulted with other GE businesses on product safety and liability issues.

Lee brings incredible experience to our Firm and our clients," said John B. Frisch, chairman and chief executive officer of Miles & Stockbridge P.C. "Not many lawyers have addressed products liability and risk management issues from so many different perspectives in their careers. Adding his talents to our thriving Products Liability practice will further advance our work to help clients ensure product quality, safety, and compliance in advance and lessen the risk of costly litigation and product recalls in the future.

Before working with GE’s consumer products businesses, Bishop was Senior Counsel for Environmental Law for GE Plastics, Of Counsel for Warner and Stackpole in Boston, an Assistant Attorney General for Massachusetts, and an Enforcement Attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington D.C. At GE Plastics, he was acting manager of the EPA’s environmental, health and safety (EHS) business organization, in addition to responsibilities as lead EHS Counsel.

"Miles & Stockbridge was the ideal choice for me given the Firm's focus on manufacturing, long history of working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, preventative approach to client challenges and platform for true partnership with their clients," said Bishop.

Bishop also will complement the Firm’s extensive experience with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and other agencies to evaluate product safety issues and act appropriately on behalf of clients worldwide. Bishop has met with senior officials of the CPSC on numerous issues, including specific recalls and general issues such as recall effectiveness and industry-wide product risk issues.

He also led the Association of Home Appliances Manufacturers task force on CPSC matters and was honored for this work. He holds the manufacturing industry’s Six Sigma Green Belt. Bishop earned his law degree from The George Washington University and graduated Cum Laude from Harvard College.
